 SCSI ID jumpers (pins one through six on J6) are provided to con-
 figure each disk drve with a SCSI device ID for use in multiple SCSI
 device configurations.

 An ID of seven is the highest priority in a multiple device
 configuration, and is usually used by the initiator.

 The disk drive is shipped from the factory with an ID of six. This
 assures that sufficient jumpers are available for any address except
 seven, which is usually reserved for the host system.


 J6 Parity
 ---------

 Parity detection can be disabled by removing the jumper from pins
 seven and eight of J6. Odd parity detection is incorporated by the
 disk drive. Odd parity is always generated.

 The disk drive is shipped with parity detection enabled.


 J6  Drive Spin-Up Options (spin with power)
 -------------------------------------------

 Wait for START Command:  With no jumper pins nine and ten of J6, the
 disk drive does not spin up until the initiator issues a START/STOP
 UNIT (1Bh) command with the start bit set to one.

 Start When Power is Applied: When pins nine and ten of J6 are
 jumpered, the motor starts as soon as power is applied. The disk
 drive is shipped in this configuration.

 The SCSI bus signals may be either single ended or differential. If a
 single ended signal is desired, configure J7 so that pins 3 and 4 are
 jumpered and all other pins are not.

 If a differential signal is desired, an optional "tailgate" PCB must
 be added to the drive. The tailgate PCB must have JP1 configured
 for the same ID as the disk drive. Additionally J7 (drive PCB) must
 have jumpers on pins 1 and 2, 5 and 6, 7 and 8, 9 and 10, and 11 and
 12, while pins 3 and 4 should not have a jumper.


 JP2/JP4/JP5  Test
 -----------------
 JP2, JP4 and JP5 are used during the manufacturing process for
 testing. After testing, the disk drive is shipped with JP4, the
 write protect jumper, installed, which write enables the drive.
 Removal of this jumper write protects the drive.


 JP8  Terminator Power Selection
 -------------------------------
 x    CLOSED  Terminator Power to the SCSI bus is protected by a fuse
              (1A) installed on the PCB.
      OPEN    The drive is prevented from supplying termination power
              to the SCSI bus.

 Power to the terminators may come internally from the disk drive or
 externally from the SCSI bus.

 The drive electronics are capable of sensing if the host is providing
 power to the terminators. If the host is not providing power, the
 disk drive automatically provides power to the terminators via a
 regulated (active) power source.

 The function of JP8 is the same for the single ended and differential
 versions.

 Drive Orientation
 -----------------
 The drive can be mounted in any orientation.


 Interface Termination
 ---------------------
 Single Ended
 SCSI devices require proper interface termination. The first physical
 device and the last physical device on a SCSI bus daisy chain must be
 terminated. Remove the terminators from any devices in between. For
 instance, if a disk drive is in the middle of a SCSI bus daisy chain,
 remove its terminators.

 The terminator resistor pack's pin one is marked with a dot, or other
 suitable marking, on the terminator. Note that the PCB's hole for pin
 one has a square outline. Also, note that pin one is always the
 closest pin to the power connector, J3.

 Note: Both terminator packs (RN1 and RN2) must be oriented with the
 dot (pin one) toward J3 for the disk drive to work properly.

 As shipped, the interface signal lines are terminated with two re-
 movable 1000 ohm resistor network packs supplied with an active
 voltage source of 2.85 volts. Resistor tolerances in the terminator
 network should be   5% or less.

 The devices driving the dis drive inputs should be open collector
 devices capable of sinking at least 48 milliamps at a voltage level
 of less than 0.5 volts DC (7438 or equivalent).

 Devices receiving the disk drive outputs should be of a SCHMITT
 trigger type to improve noise immunity (74LS14, 74LS240, or
 equivalent). The initiator should not load the bus with more than one
 standard low power Schottky transistor-transistor logic (LSTTL) load
 per input line, and should terminate all input signals with 100 ohm
 terminators with a regulated 2.85 volt power source.


 Differential
 With the installation of the optional "tailgate" PCB, RN1 and RN2
 must be changed from the factory installed 110 ohm value to a higher,
 1,000 ohm value.

 Note: The RN1 and RN2 terminator packs are "ultra-low profile"
 (maximum 3.5mm). Suggested vendors and part numbers are:
 1) Panasonic EXBU10E102G and
 2) Kyocera   TRDSA10PC102GA.


 Sector Size
 -----------
 The disk drive is shipped from the factory formatted with a default
 sector size of 512 bytes. Various other sector sizes are also
 supported.

MAXTOR    SCSI INSTALLATION

         GENERIC INSTALLATION PROCEDURE FOR A SCSI DRIVE
   -----------------------------------------------------------

 1. Install a 50 pin ribbon connector making sure pin 1, which
    can be identified by the striped edge of the cable, is closest
    to the power connector on the drive.

 2. Install a DC power cable to the back of the drive.

 3. Verify the SCSI ID selection.
    Note: SCSI ID usually needs to be set to 0 to be the boot drive.
    The last physical device on the SCSI bus must be terminated.
    Any other drive or SCSI device connected between the host and
    the device at the end of the bus must not be terminated.

 4. Apply power to the computer.

  4a. When memory test is complete go into your system's Standard
      C-MOS set-up.
      (Note:  There are various ways to get into C-MOS set-up,
      please refer to system's manual for instuctions.)

  4b. Set the drive type to "Not Installed". This intelligent drive
      will identify itself to the SCSI host adapter.

 5. Boot from a DOS diskette that has FDISK.EXE and FORMAT.COM on
    it. At the A> prompt type in FDISK. At the menu options select
    option 1 to create a DOS partition. Another menu will appear and
    from those options choose 1 to create a Primary DOS partition.
    Select yes to make 1 large partition and it will automatically
    become active. Then escape from FDISK.

 6. At the A> prompt type in FORMAT C:/S
    This does a high-level format on the drive and transfers the
    system files in order for the drive to be bootable.
    (Note: Maxtor SCSI drives are low-level formatted at the factory)

 7. The drive is now bootable. As a test remove the DOS diskette
    from A and press reset to re-boot the computer, a C> should be
    displayed, the drive is now ready for operation.
